Aster Park Overlook

If you’re looking for a moderate hike in Glacier National Park that rewards you with sweeping views without requiring an all-day commitment, the Aster Park Overlook Trail in the Two Medicine area is a great option. This 3.8-mile out-and-back trail offers a mix of forested hiking, waterfalls, and a fantastic panoramic overlook of the Two Medicine Valley.

The hike begins on the South Shore Trail, just steps from the Two Medicine Lake parking area. I decided to add a short detour to Paradise Point, a scenic peninsula that juts into the lake. This optional side hike forks off about 0.2 miles in and adds just over a mile total to the day. It’s a worthwhile addition if you have time and want a lakeside perspective before heading into the woods.

Into the Forest and Toward the Falls

The early section of the trail is relatively flat and takes you through a dense, peaceful forest. After the Paradise Point split, the trail gradually opens up into a few clearings that reveal the surrounding mountain peaks—a taste of what’s to come.

About halfway in, you’ll reach Aster Falls, a beautiful cascade tucked into a gorge. There’s a marked sign and a short side trail that takes you down to a nice viewing area. It’s a great spot for a quick rest or snack break before beginning the main climb.

Climbing to Aster Park Overlook

Beyond the falls, the trail steepens as you begin ascending a set of switchbacks. You’ll gain the majority of the trail’s elevation here—roughly 500 of the 682 feet in just under a mile. It’s a solid workout, but nothing too strenuous for most moderately active hikers.

At the top, you’ll reach a wide clearing that serves as the Aster Park Overlook. From here, you’re treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of the Two Medicine Valley, with Two Medicine Lake spread out below and mountain peaks rising in every direction. It’s an ideal spot to sit, enjoy the view, and soak in the solitude.

While there’s a faint trail that continues above the overlook, it leads into denser forest where the views become more obstructed. In my opinion, the official overlook provides the best vantage point.

The Hike Back

Like many out-and-back hikes, the return trip offers a fresh perspective. As you are hiking out you will see stunning mountain views that were at your back on the hike in.

Wildlife and Safety

I didn’t encounter any large wildlife on this particular hike, but I did notice moose scat on the trail. While driving to the trailhead, I also spotted bighorn sheep, which are fairly common in this area of the park.

Keep in mind that Glacier is grizzly bear territory, so always carry bear spray, hike in groups if possible, and stay alert.

Final Thoughts

The Aster Park Overlook Trail is a perfect half-day hike for visitors looking to get above the valley floor without an intense climb or committing to a full-day trek. With rewarding views, a waterfall stop, and the option to add on Paradise Point, this trail offers something for everyone. If you’re in the Two Medicine area, don’t miss it.
