Apgar Lookout Trail Glacier National Park

The Apgar Lookout Trail is a rewarding 7.1-mile out-and-back hike in Glacier National Park, leading to a historic fire lookout with panoramic views, including stunning sights of Lake McDonald and the surrounding valley. If you’re up for a steady climb with wide-open vistas and a bit of Glacier’s history, this trail should be on your list.

A Historic Destination

The fire lookout at the summit is the second structure to occupy the site. The original lookout, built in 1929, was destroyed just two weeks later by the Half Moon Fire. The current lookout, completed in 1930, still stands today, though it’s no longer used for fire detection. It’s considered a significant historical structure and a great destination for hikers seeking a mix of scenic beauty and park history.

The Hike

The hike begins on a relatively flat trail for the first 0.7 miles, giving your legs a brief warm-up before the climb begins. After that, prepare for a steady 2.8-mile ascent that gains around 1,900 feet. Much of this section passes through new-growth forest that regenerated after the 2003 Robert Fire, meaning shade is minimal.

A Word About the Sun

Because the trail is so exposed, it’s best tackled early in the morning, especially during the summer months. I started my hike at 8:00 AM and not only enjoyed cooler temps but also encountered only four other groups along the way. The first week of June is a great time to beat the peak crowds and catch the wildflowers blooming along the trail.

Views All the Way Up

One of the upsides to hiking through a fire-impacted forest is the unobstructed views. As you ascend, you’ll enjoy almost constant scenery looking down into the Valley below. The summit lookout offers spectacular 360-degree views, with Lake McDonald shimmering far below.

Trailhead Directions

After entering Glacier via the West Entrance, turn left onto Quarter Circle Bridge Road. This road is located before the vehicle reservation checkpoint for Going-to-the-Sun Road, making this hike accessible even without a reservation in summer 2025. Keep in mind, the reservation system changes year to year, so always check the official park site for the latest info.

Final Thoughts

The Apgar Lookout Trail is an excellent choice for hikers looking for a half-day challenge with high scenic payoff. Between its historical significance, wildflower displays, and open views, this trail delivers an experience that’s well worth the climb as long as you plan accordingly and beat the heat.
